YouTube and Universal Music Group Deal?
Rumor has it that the world's largest video share website and the world's largest music label are milling over a cooperative effort in hopes to reach the world's largest audience. The licensing agreement would likely (read: obviously) be some sort of "premium" music video site. It's no surprise that the two are discussing collaboration. YouTube has lately been particularly interested in getting first-rate content, which draws higher ad prices. And it would seem Universal wouldn't have a problem with getting their content out to more people.
Of course you see the inherent problem and the likely discussions that are occurring between the two. YouTube (Google) wants high-caliber content for cheap, and is willing to assist Universal in getting their material to the masses. Universal, on the other hand, want their music out to as many people as possible, but want money (likely more than Google would like to pay).
Need we put it simpler? YouTube wants more money. Universal wants more money. Common users want higher quality content for free, with the least obtrusive ads. When we work together, we all win. Good luck to everyone.
In closing, may we suggest a few premium collaborative performances we would like to see UMG coordinate and get on YouTube:
- Nelly Furtado and Janet Jackson
- Bon Jovi, Peter Gabriel, and Maria Carey
- Guns N' Roses with Aerosmith
- The Jonas Brothers and New Kids on the Block
- Elton John and anyone
